Serenity Centre

Serenity Centre is our inpatient facility. We run a two-week inpatient programme for clients who need to undergo detoxification. The inpatient programme is made up of two phases – a detox phase and a preparation/discharge planning phase.

The programme is run by a multidisciplinary team made up of psychiatrists, nurses, psychologists, counsellors, medical social workers, and occupational therapists.

Detoxification Programme

To recover from substance addiction, a formal detox period is the first stage of recovery. It prepares you physically and mentally before engaging in the rest of the rehabilitation process.

Generally, if you are substance dependent, you will experience very uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms when you discontinue your drug use. Typically, this will last up to a week. Furthermore, you might run the risk of medical complications as a result of withdrawal symptoms.

NAMS offers a medically supervised treatment that helps to discontinue the active use of addictive substances. During this phase, we place an emphasis on the medical needs of our clients and we may provide medication to relieve the withdrawal symptoms.

Preparation/Discharge Planning Phase

After you get through the withdrawal phase, you can choose to participate in the one-week inpatient programme which focuses on the psychosocial aspects of treatment. These include individual counselling, group activities (psychoeducation on addiction and recovery, and socialization skills), family intervention, and financial and occupational support. The inpatient programme covers:

  1. Understanding addiction
  2. Understanding recovery
  3. Barriers to recovery
  4. Relapse prevention plan;
  5. Community resources
  6. Talks from other agencies (WE CARE Community Services, Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Industrial & Services Co-Operative Society Ltd (ISCOS);
  7. Healthy social activities

The programme also aims for clients to collaboratively develop a discharge plan (which may include placement in halfway houses, and/or assistance from various government services) with their counsellor. This is to help clients sustain their recovery after they complete the inpatient programme.

Admission to Serenity Centre and the two-week inpatient programme is based on:

  • An assessment of the client's medical and rehabilitation needs
  • The client's demonstrated motivation to complete the programme

Serenity Centre has two-bedded air-conditioned rooms, a group therapy room, a relaxation room and recreational facilities.
